What I’m Loving Wednesday: 8/12/15

Happy Hump Day and all that good stuff. I can’t believe summer is nearly over and soon we’ll be whipping out the sweaters and leggings. But who am I kidding. I wear sweaters and leggings year round. I’m here sipping on my usual vanilla Americano and a random Diet Coke with the name “Sylvia,” on it. I am determined to find my damn name on a Coke bottle.

What I’m listening to: “Drag Me Down,” by One Direction, Melanie Martinez

I’ve kicked the showbiz obsession and now it’s back to your regularly scheduled programming: boppy pop music! My One Direction infection has certainly faded considerably over the past year (thank God, it was getting embarrassing), but that doesn’t mean that I still don’t get excited for new 1D tunes. “Drag Me Down” marks the first post-Zayn single and, honestly, it sounds just as good. Harry takes over what would have definitely been Zayn’s riffs at the end and he pulls it off. Plus I’m always a sucker for songs where Louis gets to shine because I’m still and will always be a Louis Girl. Bring on album numero five.

I’ve been a fan of Melanie Martinez ever since she auditioned for The Voice with that gritty, broken-down version of “Toxic.”  I liked her EP that was released last year, and her new stuff is just as good. Her style is unique, it’s funky, and it’s a tad alternative and definitely up my alley. I’m pumped for her album to come out next week—I may need to treat myself to new music. My favorites are “Dollhouse,” “Soap,” and “Pity Party.”

What I’m watching: Boy Meets World, The Office (hello flash from the past)

Since my discovery that ABC Fam airs Boy Meets World reruns every morning, I’ve been loving my BMW DVD collection. So happy that I decided to purchase them all a few summers ago. Reliving Cory and Topanga’s love story, Eric’s descent into madness, learning life lessons from Feeny…I feel like a kid again. And I’m still convinced that the season 5 Halloween detention episode is one of the best holiday tv episodes ever made.

Digging out another old favorite, I’ve also been making my way through The Office. It’s hard to believe that Steve Carell never won any awards for his portrayal of Michael Scott. His actions and overall thought process are so squirm worthy that I get secondhand embarrassment watching. I guess that means he did his job well. And I can’t complain about seeing John Krasinski’s face. Jim Halpert will always be one of my favorite characters. I wish I had gotten hooked on this show earlier and got to watch the whole show in real time. I remember people skipping night class  so they could watch Jim and Pam’s wedding episode.

What I’m reading: “House Rules”

Still making my way through “Wild,” I’ve hit a wall reading it, but I’m so determined to finish. I hate leaving books unread even if I’m not feeling it. Sooo I kind of cheated. In addition to knocking out a few pages of “Wild,” I started reading “House Rules” by Jodi Picoult. Picoult is one of my favorite authors, so I’m very hopeful that this be an easy read and get me back on track with my goal to read 15 books in 2015. “House Rules” is about a boy with Asperger’s who gets accused of murder, and how this revelation affects his family and his town. It’s written in multiple POV’s, as is usz for Picoult. I’m about 30 pages in and I’m intrigued.

Au Revoir, Zayn

tumblr_mxwws5NoWH1ra1ly1o1_r1_500My boyband loving heart is in mourning. Battle cry voice: Zaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyn.

You know when you look at someone and just think, “Damn son. Congrats on your face”? Yup. That’s Zayn.
<—— *taylor swift voice* Oh my God, look at that face!

In the era of “FOUR” the band has been whittled down to…well, four. If you haven’t heard, One Direction member, Zayn Malik, officially announced to leaving the band this morning. All of the boys have quality voices, but in my opinion, Zayn’s was a little notch above the others. He was often the one they used to do the impressive riffs before the end chorus, much like Amber Riley in Glee.

His departure comes as both a complete shock and a completely understandable decision. Zayn has often said he has a more difficult time with all the paparazzi and lack of privacy, however, I guess I always just figured that when the time came they’d all quit together. It would be a sad day, but One Direction isn’t One Direction without all five original members. Today is that sad day.

It’s sad, but it’s also completely understandable. Ever since the boys started their reign (nearly 5 years ago), they’ve been worked overtime without any kind of substantial break. Add in being in the public eye and constant pressure, that’d beat anyone down. As much as my 1D loving heart is broken, I’m also truly impressed that he had the guts to make this move. Kudos, Zayn, for staying true to you. Is it too early to ask whether or not tickets are going to be cheaper now? Yup. Too soon too soon.

While we sit here and grieve, treat your ears to this collection of Zayn’s best vocals.

The Awkward, Obligatory One Direction Post

Untitled-1

I’d like to tell you a story of woe aka my descent into madness via the One Direction Infection. It all started with a typical night of browsing YouTube when a banner promoting “What Makes You Beautiful” popped up on my screen. “Oh, that guy in the red pants is really pretty,” I thought, “Let’s click on this video.” Pressing play that fateful March night was simultaneously the best and worst decision of my life.
